Philip Carl Hurd was born on June 24 at 4:24 pm. He weighed 8lbs 10oz, and he was 20 in long. Since I was in very miserable slow labor for the week leading up to his birth I decided to be induced. Instead of starting a pitocin drip I decided that breaking my water would probably be enough to send me into active labor. The Dr came and broke my water at 10:50. I was dilated to a 4 and 80% effaced. I made it until about 1:30 or 2 without an epidural, but then it was too much so I decided to have one. At this point I had only dilated to a 5. When it seemed like the epidural had slowed my labor down my Dr decided to start me on pitocin. Immediately after starting pitocin they checked me again. The nurse said I was a 6, no... a 6 plus, no... a 7. She turned around for a minute and I asked her to check again. There was suddenly so much pressure. I was an 8, no... a 9. I was literally dilating as she checked me. She was so surprised that it was going so fast. She rushed to call my Dr and when she came back it was time to push. I'm pretty sure that I could have just sat there and the contractions would have pushed him out on their own. I pushed a few times before my Dr got there, and only twice with my Dr and Philip popped right out. My Dr made a joke about how he thinks women should skip their first pregnancy and go straight to their second because delivery is so much easier. After it was all done I felt so much better. I stopped shaking and feeling sick. We decided to leave the hospital after only 1 day in recovery. I was really feeling fine, and we knew that it would be easier to fully recover and get used to our new baby without nurses popping in and out all the time.
Here are a few pictures of Philip. He is so sweet! We can't get enough of him.
